For centuries the banjo has captured the hearts of Americans with its old-timey allure. Today Matthew Davis brings newfound innovation to the classic charm of this instrument, making the banjo more exciting than ever before! Multi-instrumentalist Matthew Davis is one of this generation’s premier banjo players and composers. Davis started out on piano before learning the banjo as a teen. By the time he was 18, he had already won the National Banjo Championship, bringing both his natural-born talent and eclectic musical lexicon to the instrument. Now, at age 20, Davis keeps a full schedule on the road while also pursuing a degree in Jazz Studies from the prestigious University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is a founding member of the “chambergrass” (bluegrass/jazz/classical chamber music) group Westbound Situation” as well as the progressive bluegrass group Circus Number 9 (described as “John Hartford meets John Coltrane”). Both groups were formed by alumni of Mike Marshall’s esteemed Acoustic Music Seminar—a summit for young acoustic musicians.
